There’s a fine line between powerful polemic and intemperate tantrum, upon which Anis Shivani’s Huffington Posts teeter harrowingly. But beneath the bluster there is usually the germ of a worthwhile insight, as with his most recent, “rules for writers.”

Reading over the rules, it struck me that someone has been practicing almost exactly the same tenets for over three decades, albeit in the field of “pop” music rather than literature.

If you’re uninitiated, I invite you to step into the wonderfully enigmatic world of Jandek. You could start with the fine recent documentary on his music and what very little is known of the man and his life, before you proceed to the records themselves.

And if you’re still in one psycho-spiritual piece, you may well eventually have the chance to see him perform. A recent development that his cult would not have thought imaginable just a decade ago.
